Matelich Posts First Career CCSA Podium Finish at Championships

HOUGHTON, Mich. (csssaints.com) – For the first time this season sophomore Nick Matelich (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS (Montana State)) led the St. Scholastica men's ski team in a Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) race and for the first time in his career recorded a podium finish in a CCSA race at Sunday's 20km classic mass start of the CCSA Championships.
 
Top Performers
Matelich posted a strong race coming in third place overall with a time of 1:02:03. Matelich has scored for the Saints in every CCSA classic race thus far this season. It is his second podium finish overall this season as he also placed third in the season-opening Duluth CXC race back in December.
 
Junior Tamer Mische-Richter (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy HS) finished 11th overall with a time of 1:03:10, while fellow junior Ryan Steger (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) edged teammate John Schwinghamer (Mora, Minn./Mora HS (South Dakota State)) at the finish line for 15th place overall and the final scoring spot for CSS. Steger's time was 1:04:18.4, while Schwinghamer finished in 1:04:18.5. Steger was the only Saint to score in both races this weekend.
 
Team Scores
Northern Michigan University won as a team for the second straight day with 100 points. The Wildcats' Mathias Rolid also won for the second straight day with a time of 1:00:47. Michigan Tech University was second with 89 points and the Saints third with 79 points.
 
Up Next
The Saints are back in the U.P. of Michigan next week for the NCAA Central Region Championships at the Al Quaal Recreation Area.
