Singles Action Pushes Men’s Tennis to First Win

VIRGINIA, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team rallied to win the final four singles matches and narrowly edge Concordia College-Moorhead 5-4 late Saturday night at the Virginia Indoor Tennis and Pickleball Club.

Doubles:
The Saints fell into a 3-0 hole after dropping all three doubles matches to the Cobbers (1-4). The No. 3 team of Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Duke Nguyen (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy and Summit School) went to a tiebreak before falling 8-7 (7-3).

Singles:
First-year player Carter Anderson (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) got CSS on the board winning at the No. 6 spot 6-3, 6-3. However, Concordia followed with a win at the No. 3 spot to put them one win away from clinching the dual.

Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 position. That was followed by Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) prevailing at the No. 1 spot 6-3, 6-4.

Kearney had to win a first set tiebreak at No. 4 singles, but ultimately won in straight sets 7-6 (8-6), 6-3. The final match to complete late in the evening was Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) at the No. 5 spot, who also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, to give the Saints the dual win.
