Second Half Spark Leads Men’s Basketball over Morris

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team welcomed the University of Minnesota Morris to The Reif for a Saturday afternoon Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup. A chippy first half resulted with the Saints gaining a five-point lead heading into half. The Saints came out of the half on a 14-5 run and would steer the ship the rest of the half winning 85-63.
 
How It Happened
CSS got on the board first and held an 8-3 lead two and a half minutes into the first half. The Cougars (7-16, 3-11 UMAC) tied the game up 8-8 before a 7-0 run with four points from Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) and three points from Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) gave the Saints a 15-8 lead. Morris charged back with a 10-0 run to get its first lead of the game 18-15. St. Scholastica would answer with a 13-2 run to regain an eight-point lead 28-20. The Saints lead grew to as large as 11 points with 3:44 left in the half. Morris went on a 10-4 run to close out the half bringing the gap to five points with the Saints holding a 45-40 lead.
 
The Saints came out of the break on a 14-5 run to extend their lead to 14 points, 59-45. CSS continued on with its dominant second half holding a strong lead, only letting Morris get the deficit as low as 11 for the remainder of the game. The Saints held Morris to 29 percent shooting from the field in the second half on their way to an 85-63 win.
 
Top Performers
Silgen was the game's leading scorer with 22 points. Carlson chipped in 16 points and Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
