DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team concluded its regular season Tuesday night with a Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) re-direct goal 2:05 into overtime to defeat the University of St. Thomas 2-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena.

How It Happened
After a scoreless opening period, the Saints capitalized on their first power-play opportunity of the game when Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) buried his 11th of the season to make it 1-0 midway through the second period. Jon Hansen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) and Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) had the assists.

It remained 1-0 St. Scholastica into the third period as the ice started to tilt in the Tommies (9-9-3) favor. However, St. Thomas would be called for a too many skaters penalty and then would get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on top of that, giving CSS a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage.

During the two-skater advantage, the Saints would not get many good scoring opportunities and the Tommies even had a chance to score short-handed on a breakaway, but were denied by Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)). The Saints would fail on the 5-on-3 power-play and St. Thomas earned a power-play just a minute later. The Tommies would score on their power-play to tie the game with 9:15 remaining.

St. Thomas would have two more power-plays the rest of the period, but came up empty and the game went to overtime.

Just over two minutes into the overtime, the puck found Karl Wright (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (Connecticut Nighthawks-USPHL)) at the blue line, who proceeded to throw it towards the net where senior Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) re-directed it into the net to give the Saints the 2-1 victory. Zack DeBoom (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Granite City-NA3HL)) also had an assist on the goal.

Goaltending
Trenciansky earned his first win of the season, making 30 saves. Camden Burggrabe had 21 saves for the Tommies.

Up Next
The Saints (8-16-1) will now wait to see who their quarterfinal opponent will be in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup playoffs, which will take place on February 21 and 22.
