FOND DU LAC, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team upended Marian University (Wis.) 5-3 Friday night in game one of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Harris Cup Quarterfinals.
How It Happened
The Saints struck quickly and
Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) scored just 25 seconds into the game to make it 1-0.
Brent Jones (Hartland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central HS (Trine)) had the assist. CSS extended its lead to 2-0 with 11 minutes remaining in the period on a
Boe Bjorge (Grand Forks, N.D./Grand Forks Central HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) goal.
Jaedin Ness (Wayzata, Minn./Holy Family Catholic Prep HS (Fort Francis-SIJHL)) and
Riley Bechard (Sedley, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Woodstock-MJAHL)) were credited with the assists. For Ness, it was his first collegiate assist. The Sabres would get on the board two minutes later to make it 2-1 at the first intermission.
Like the opening period, the Saints scored less than 30 seconds into the second period, as it was
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) lighting the lamp this time on the power-play.
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) and
Kyle Star (Langley, British Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) had the assists. Marian answered midway through the period to make it 3-2 at the second intermission.
Star made it a two-goal St. Scholastica lead once again with 13 minutes to go in the third period. This was Star's first game since January 3.
Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) and Bechard assisted the goal. The Sabres cut the margin to 4-3 just over a minute later, but Cordeiro gave the Saints the insurance they needed with less than seven minutes to play to make the final 5-3.
Zack DeBoom (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Granite City-NA3HL)) had the assist on the Cordeiro goal.
Goaltending
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)), who missed the regular season meetings between the two teams, made 43 saves to earn the win. Hunter Vorva had 17 saves for the Sabres.
Up Next
The Saints (9-16-1) need a win or tie tomorrow (Saturday) to advance to the Harris Cup semifinals. However, if the Sabres (17-8-1) win, the two teams will play a 20-minute mini-game immediately following game two.
