St. Norbert Pulls Away to Defeat Men’s Hockey

Notables
-Senior Night for CSS
-Hansen records an assist in both games of the series

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – For the second consecutive night the St. Scholastica men's hockey team jumped up on St. Norbert College (Wis.), but for the second straight night the Green Knights had the last say, scoring the final five goals of the game, including three in the third period to defeat Saints 5-1 Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NHCA) play.

How It Happened
The Saints took a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) re-directed the puck off a St. Norbert player and into the net. Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) and Jon Hansen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) had the assists. The Green Knights (12-8-2, 10-6-2 NCHA) tied the game with less than nine minutes remaining in the first period after a CSS giveaway to make it 1-1. Moments later, Hansen struck the pipe with a slap shot, so the game remained tied heading into the second period.

St. Scholastica would have seven minutes of power-play time in the second period, including a five-minute power-play early in the period. However, the Saints failed to convert either opportunity. Late in the period, CSS simultaneously committed two penalties, which gave the Green Knights a full two minutes of 5-on-3. The Saints killed it for 50 seconds, but St. Norbert eventually found the net to take the lead at 2-1 at the second intermission.

The Green Knights added a power-play goal midway through the third to make it 3-1 and a CSS turnover led to a breakaway goal with five minutes remaining to extend the margin to 4-1. St. Norbert added an empty-netter to make the final 5-1.

Goaltending
Jack Branby (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS (Winnipeg Blues-MJHL)) had 27 saves for the Saints, while Colby Entz had 21 saves for the Green Knights.

Up Next
The Saints (5-16-1, 3-14-1 NCHA) will have a home-and-home series with Finlandia University (Mich.) with postseason implications, which begins Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mars Lakeview Arena.
