DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team moved a step closer in earning a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) playoff spot with an 8-1 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) in a rare Thursday matchup at Mars Lakeview Arena.

How It Happened
The Saints got their first goal of the contest with four minutes left in the opening period when Riley Bechard (Sedley, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Woodstock-MJAHL)) scored his first collegiate goal. Jon Hansen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) had the assist. With the first period expiring, CSS made it 2-0 as Hansen found the net with two seconds left. Karl Wright (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (Connecticut Nighthawks-USPHL)) and Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) were credited with the assists.

St. Scholastica kept it going in the second period as it was Hansen again, scoring this time on the power-play, six minutes into the period to make the score 3-0. Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) and Zack DeBoom (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Granite City-NA3HL)) had the assists. Then it was Fralich scoring a pair of goals midway through the second period. Both goals were assisted by Mike Nolan (Aldergrove, British Columbia/Yale Secondary (Fresno-WSHL)) and Brent Jones (Hartland, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central HS (Trine)). CSS extended it to 6-0 after a Talbot rebound goal with two minutes remaining. Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) and Bradley Golant (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS (Hearst-NOJHL)) assisted. The Saints out-shot the Lions 28-10 after two periods.

After Finlandia got on the board with a power-play goal early in the third, Nolan made some nifty moves and scored short-handed as the score stood at 7-1. Wright and Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) had the assists. The final goal belonged to Hinterser with assists from Fralich and Max Mettler (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Minot-NAHL)) to make the final 8-1.

Goaltending
Senior Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) started his first game since early January and stopped the first 10 shots he saw to earn the win. Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) stopped all nine shots in the third period, including a penalty-shot attempt.
