DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team was defeated for the second consecutive night by Lawrence University (Wis.) by a final of 3-1 on Saturday at Mars Lakeview Arena in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NHCA) play.
How It Happened
The Saints started much better than compared to Friday night and were rewarded when
Brandon Schweickert (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis HS (Niagara Falls-USPHL)) skated around the net and buried his first collegiate goal eight minutes into the game to make it 1-0.
Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) and
Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) were credited with the assists.
It stayed 1-0 CSS until four minutes into the second period as a Lawrence deflected shot bounced off the crossbar, but the carom bounced right in front of the net and was pushed past the goal line to tie the contest at 1-1. Starting goaltender
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) would also be injured during the sequence and the Saints went to backup
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) for the second straight night. The rest of period would see no more scoring or penalties despite the Saints outshooting the Vikings 16-8.
Less than a minute into the third period the Saints were called for a major penalty and the Vikings (5-8-1, 4-5-1 NCHA) took advantage. Eight seconds into the power-play Lawrence took its first lead at 2-1. However, CSS would kill off the rest of the major.
St. Scholastica pulled the goaltender with 2:38 remaining and drew a Viking penalty just about a minute later. With the 6-on-4 advantage, the Saints put a few shots on goal, but many were blocked. One of those blocked shots would ultimately result in an empty-net goal for Lawrence to make the final 3-1.
Goaltending
Steeves had 18 saves in 24 minutes of action. Trenciansky had 11 saves in 34 minutes. Brian Tallieu won for the second consecutive night, making 38 saves.
