Men’s Hockey Unable to Overcome Early Three-Goal Deficit

Notables
-Lawrence has won its last two games at Mars Lakeview after going winless in the previous 10 visits
-Mismash scores first goal in first game of the year

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team opened the new decade by allowing three Lawrence University (Wis.) goals in the first six minutes of the game and could not climb all the way back in a 3-2 loss Friday night in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) series opener at Mars Lakeview Arena.

How It Happened
The Vikings got off to a very quick start scoring three goals on their first seven shots and led 3-0 just five minutes and 17 seconds into the game. That would be the score at the first intermission.

The Saints started to get their legs under them in the second period, outshooting Lawrence 18-6 in the period. CSS got on the board five minutes into the period on a Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) goal to make it 3-1. Max Mettler (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS (Minot-NAHL)) had the assist. After the Saints failed to convert a power-play in the last five minutes of the period, Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) almost cut the margin to one as he struck the iron with a hard slap shot. However, the score remained 3-1 entering the third period.

St. Scholastica got another power-play opportunity past the midway point of the third period, but once again came up empty. The Saints pulled the netminder with 3:31 remaining and would cut the margin to 3-2 on a Parker Mismash (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minnesota Magicians-NAHL)) goal with 2:50 remaining. Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) and Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) had the assists.

Unfortunately for the Saints, that would be the last shot on goal for the game as the Vikings hung on for the 3-2 victory.

Goaltending
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) played the final 52 minutes of the game and stopped all 18 shots that he faced. Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) had three saves in the loss. Brian Tallieu had 36 saves in the victory for the Vikings.
