DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team welcomed Martin Luther College to The Reif for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup on Saturday afternoon. St. Scholastica would face a stingy Knights defense that would keep the game interesting with 11 lead changes, but the Saints would make a run in the final nine minutes of the game to come up on top 88-70.
How It Happened
The Saints started out facing a stingy Martin Luther defense with the visiting Knights (4-13, 1-8 UMAC) gaining an early 6-2 lead. St. Scholastica would battle back to gain the lead five minutes into the game at 13-12. The Knights went on a 22-12 run in the next six minutes to gain their biggest lead of the half 34-23.
The Saints would get a spark with
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) converting an and-one opportunity. St. Scholastica then went on a 17-6 run to get a one-point lead after a
Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) three pointer. The final minute and a half would be owned by the Saints extending their lead to seven with
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) making the last five points of the half to give a 47-40 lead for St. Scholastica heading into the break.
Martin Luther came out of halftime on a quick 8-2 run to get within one point of the Saints at 49-48. The Saints would extend a lead up to five, but Martin Luther would fight back once again within one 56-55. St. Scholastica would struggle with a 2-3 defense run by Martin Luther, but would be able to crack the zone with the last nine minutes of the game owned by the Saints going on a 27-14 run to close out the game and get the win 88-70.
Top Performers
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) led the Saints offense with 19 points.
Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) and
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) recorded double doubles with Silgen scoring 18 points and bringing down 10 rebounds and Fischer scoring 17 points and 10 boards. Carlson added 17 points in the win.
