DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team finished with an 8-1 win over the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Saturday afternoon at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center to capture its 23
rd consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) regular season championship.
Doubles
Like the women's team, the Saints got off to a fantastic start sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and
Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) defeated the Eagles 8-2. Right on their heels,
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 8-3 as team No. 2.
Anton Sopin (Saratov, Russia/Gymnasium #8 (Tabor College)) and
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) cut it close edging their opponents 8-7 with a 7-5 score in the tiebreak.
Singles
Schneider was the first singles match to finish as he was in total control in a 6-2, 6-0 win. Gonzalez clinched the dual victory for the Saints at the No. 3 spot, winning 6-3, 6-1.
Tykhonenko did just enough to win at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-4, 6-4. Sopin rallied in the first set to ultimately win in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. The final winner on the day was Jolowsky at the No. 6 spot, cruising to a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

The Saints (12-7, 7-0 UMAC) will host a UMAC Tournament semifinal match on Monday against Martin Luther College at MacArthur School Tennis Courts in West Duluth beginning at 4:30 p.m.
