VIRGINIA, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team will return to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship after defeating Martin Luther College 9-0 in the UMAC semifinals Monday night.
Doubles
The Saints swept the three doubles matches to begin the evening. The No. 1 team of
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and
Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) prevailed 8-2 for their eighth straight win. The No. 2 team of
Anton Sopin (Saratov, Russia/Gymnasium #8 (Tabor College)) and
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 8-4. That was also the winning score for the No. 3 team of
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and
Duke Nguyen (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy and Summit School).
Singles
The Saints went on to cruise in singles action, winning all six matches in straight sets. Kearney was the first to finish, not dropping a game at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-0. Gonzalez then clinched the dual for CSS, winning at the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2. That was Gonzalez's seventh straight singles win
Tykhonenko won 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 position and Sopin trumped his opponent 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Jolowsky also won 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 position and finally
Connor Croft (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.
Up Next
The Saints (13-7) will face either the University of Northwestern (Minn.) or the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Friday or Saturday in Duluth or Virginia, weather pending for the UMAC Tournament championship.
