SUPERIOR, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated Bridge Rival University of Wisconsin-Superior 7-2 on Thursday in a match that was much closer than the final tally indicated.
Doubles
The doubles matches actually all took place on Wednesday before the rains came and halted action to today. CSS took two of the three doubles matches.
The No. 1 team of
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and
Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) won 8-2. The No. 2 tandem of
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) needed a tiebreaker to win 8-7 (7-4).
Singles
Four singles matches were in progress on Wednesday when rain suspended action.
Schneider cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot to extend his winning streak to 12 matches. Gonzalez also had no issues to win 6-1, 5-0 before his opponent retired.
With four wins in the dual, the Saints needed one more singles win. That would be difficult to come by as UWS won at the No. 4 spot in straight sets to make it 4-2. The other singles matches would all finish in a third set super-breaker.
CSS dropped the first set in two of those three remaining matches. At the No. 1 spot, Tykhonenko fell behind a set, but rallied to take the second set 6-3. The third set super-breaker would be tight, but Tykhonenko prevailed 10-8 to take the match and seal the dual win. At the No. 5 spot,
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) dropped the first set 7-5 and then edged his opponent in a tiebreaker in the second set 7-6 (7-3) to keep the match alive. Kearney road that momentum to take the super-breaker easily 10-2.
The final match saw Jolowsky win the first set at the No. 6 spot 6-3, but drop the second set 6-1. He responded by winning the super-breaker 10-6.
