WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team split a doubleheader with Lesley University (Mass.) on Saturday to open its 2019 season at the Russmatt Invitational.
Lesley 7, CSS 1
The Lynx (1-1) scored the first seven runs en route to a 7-1 victory over the Saints in game one.
Lesley scored a pair of unearned runs in the second. It added four more runs in the fourth with a two-out rally to take a 6-0 lead. After the Lynx added a run to make it 7-0,
Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) got the Saints their first run of the season with a RBI single to bring in
Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS). That would be the final of 7-1.
Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS) had two of the team's six hits.
Isaac Rocha (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) had nine strikeouts in four innings, but picked up the loss.
CSS 7, Lesley 3
The nightcap saw the Saints take advantage of Lynx miscues early to gain a split and win 7-3.
Zwak got the Saints on the board in the top of the first, scoring from third when the ball got away from the first baseman on a pick-off attempt.
Cole Tyman (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound HS) extended the lead to 2-0 with his two-out RBI triple to bring in
Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS).
CSS added four runs in the third inning.
Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS), Tyman and
Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) all had RBIs in the inning to make it 6-0. The Lynx plated three runs in the fifth to cut the margin to 6-3. However, Weber hit a RBI triple in the sixth to put the lead back at four at 7-3. That would also be the final as
Braydon Hanson (Monticello, Minn./Monticello HS (UW-Whitewater)) pitched the final three innings to earn his first collegiate save in his first collegiate pitching appearance.
Jake Sande (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) went four innings and allowed only three hits to earn the victory. Tyman drove in a pair of runs, while Gooley was 2-for-2 at the plate.
