AUBURNDALE, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team was unable to fight back, dropping Sunday's contest with Fontbonne University (Mo.) 11-1 at the RussMatt Invitational.
How It Happened
After St. Scholastica went down in order in the top of the first inning, the Griffins (11-1) jumped ahead of the Saints 3-0 in the bottom half of the inning on two singles and a double. After a quiet second inning for the Saints, they got on the board in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back doubles from
Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and
Cole Tyman (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound HS) pushed the first run across. That would turn out to be the only run for the Saints. They would get just those two hits collectively.
However, the Griffins tacked on two more runs with two outs in the bottom frame and added three runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead. They would end game in seven innings by a final of 11-1.
Fontbonne pitcher Luke Summers threw a complete game with 11 strikeouts.
Grant Mergen (Maple Lake, Minn./Maple Lake HS) started on the mound for the Saints and battled through 5.2 innings, striking out six.
Grant Taival (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi HS) finished the game, striking out one and surrendering just one hit.
