WHITEWATER, Wis. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica baseball team suffered two close losses against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, who is ranked 22 in the country, on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: UWW 2, CSS 0
The Saints had potential to do some damage early in game one, but were shut down by the Warhawks' pitcher. In the top of the second inning,
Cole Tyman (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound HS) was able to reach base safely on a dropped third strike then was moved to second as a result of a walk from
Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS).
Brad Fossum (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake HS (Concordia-St. Paul)) came out with the first hit of the game for the Saints to load the bases with two outs, but a strikeout left them stranded.
A pitching battle left the next three innings scoreless, but in the sixth and seventh innings, the Warhawks were able to capitalize on a couple of Saints' errors and a few well-placed hits to bring in two runs. St. Scholastica was unable to answer back and the Warhawks would take game one 2-0.
Fossum led the Saints going 2-for-4 with a double. Tyman and
Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS) each had a hit apiece. Collectively, the Saints drew four walks.
Isaac Rocha (Owatonna, Minn./Owatonna HS) took the loss for the Saints, pitching seven innings and collecting six strikeouts.
Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) came in to pitch the final inning for St. Scholastica.

The Warhawks (7-5) got ahead early in game two, scoring three runs in the first three innings. They then added on two more unearned runs in the sixth. The Saints were silenced until an eighth inning two-out rally.
Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) singled to the right side then was able to advance to third by a
Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) double.
Lane Girtz (Pierz, Minn./Pierz Healy HS) was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, a strikeout from Whitewater retired the side before the Saints could do any damage. Whitewater eventually took the game 5-0.
