Game One: CSS 12, SMU 4
The Saints got things going right away in the first inning with a hit from
Zach Harding (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing HS) followed by a fielder's choice situation that allowed
Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) to reach safely. Munn then stole second, placing him in scoring position.
Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS) was able to drive him in with a single up the middle for the first run of the game. After
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) drew a walk, Connor Wollenzien doubled to drive in two more before the Cardinals were able to retire the side, giving the Saints a 3-0 advantage.
After a couple three up, three down exchanges, the Saints were able to put another run on the board in the bottom of the third with a Weber home run. Saint Mary's answered by outscoring St. Scholastica 4-3 in the next two innings. However, the Saints compiled five more runs to their lead off of three hits in the bottom of the sixth to give them the eight-run advantage and eventual 12-4 game one win.
Weber went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
Cole Tyman (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound HS) was 2-for-3 at the plate. Wollenzien was 2-for-4 with two doubles and six RBIs.
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) received the complete-game win for the Saints with two strikeouts, allowing seven hits.
Game Two: SMU 4, CSS 1
Game two fell more in the Cardinals (8-8) favor as they jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first inning. The Saints would score their only run of the game in the second inning. Weber lined up the middle and stole second. A groundout from Olson allowed Weber to reach third while a groundout from Wollenzien drove in the run.
After two scoreless innings, the Cardinals converted two hits into a run in the fifth inning, and three hits in the seventh into another run to ultimately overcome the Saints 4-1. The Saints totaled three hits in 23 at-bats.
Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) led the Saints with two hits and a stolen base. Weber went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and was the lone Saint to score. Wollenzien received the only RBI for the Saints in game two.
Jake Sande (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) took the loss for the Saints, striking out one and allowing nine hits.
