AUBURNDALE, Fla. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team ended its action at the RussMatt Invitational with a 12-6 victory over Westfield State University (Mass.) Saturday morning.

How it Happened
The Saints scored in each of the first four innings and then added five insurance runs late to hold off the Owls (4-4).

Cole Tyman (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound HS) hit a two-run home run in the top of the second inning to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. The Saints held on to the lead the rest of the way.

Cody Venske (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) added a RBI single in the third inning to extend the lead to 4-2. After a Westfield State home run in the bottom frame, Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) hit his second home run in as many days, a mammoth three-run shot to left field to make it 7-3 CSS.

The Owls got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 7-5. Westfield threatened again putting runners at the corners with nobody out. The next Owls batter hit a fly ball to right fielder Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS). Weber made the catch and proceeded to cut down the runner coming home. Tyman applied the tag at the plate and would also whip it down to second to get that runner trying to advance to second for a triple play to end the inning.

After the Saints stranded the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the Owls cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom frame and were looking for, but would also leave the bases loaded.

CSS got much-needed insurance in the top of the eighth with a two-run double from Conor Wollenzien (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS) and a two-RBI single by Joey Zwak (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) to extend the lead to 11-6. Weber added a RBI double in the ninth to make the final score 12-6.

Pitching
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) struck out five in six innings to earn his first win of the season. Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) pitched the final three innings to earn his first collegiate save. The Owls used six pitchers in the loss.

Up Next:
The Saints (4-4) are scheduled to play next on Wednesday, March 27 at Wade Stadium for a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Mary's University.
