ORLANDO, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team won both of its matches on Sunday down in Florida to begin Spring Break action.
CSS 5, Saint Ambrose 4
The Saints opened action on Sunday with a 5-4 win over NAIA's Saint Ambrose University (Iowa).
The Fighting Bees (1-8) had the advantage following doubles action winning two of the three matches. The lone CSS team to win was the No. 1 team of
Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) by an 8-4 score.
In singles, Schneider shut out his opponent at the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-0.
Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won at the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2.
Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) also won at the No. 3 spot 7-5, 6-3.
Connor Croft (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) would be the team's fifth winner to clinch the dual as he won at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-1. That was Croft's first win of the season.
CSS 9, Franciscan 0
In the nightcap, the Saints cruised to a 9-0 victory over Franciscan University (Ohio).
In doubles, the No. 1 team of
Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and
Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) won 8-2. The No. 2 team of Schneider and Jolowsky also won by an 8-2 score. The No. 3 team of
Anton Sopin (Saratov, Russia/Gymnasium #8 (Tabor College)) and Kearney won 8-3.
In singles, Tykhonenko hung on to win at the No. 1 spot 6-1, 7-6 (8-6). Schneider won his seventh straight singles match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot. Gonzalez extended his win streak to five at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-0.
Sopin won 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 4 position for his first singles win as a Saint. Kearney prevailed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 and Jolowsky won 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.
