KISSIMMEE, Fla. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica baseball team lost a nail-biter to No. 13 Concordia University-Chicago 3-1 Monday at the RussMatt Invitational.
How It Happened
Early on, the Saints and Cougars (4-1) were locked in a pitchers' duel, as the game was scoreless through four innings. In the top of the fifth, CUC was able to capitalize on timely hitting and a couple of Saints errors to push three runs across. All three runs were unearned.
The score would remain 3-0 until the eighth inning when CSS would threaten the Cougar lead.
Tim Munn (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) led off with a triple, followed by an
Eric Pearson (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park HS) walk and an
Aaron Weber (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Pierz HS) single that would score Munn. However, CSS stranded the bases loaded. The Saints failed to get anything brewing in the ninth, leaving the score at 3-1 and resulting in a Concordia-Chicago victory.
Pitching
Matt Tautges (Fort Ripley, Minn./Pierz HS) started on the mound for the Saints, surrendering three unearned runs over five innings. He struck seven over those five innings. Freshman
Jerry Gooley (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) came on in relief and faced the minimum over four innings in his first collegiate pitching appearance. For Concordia-Chicago, Kyle Strepek struck out 11 over seven innings to earn the win.
Offensively
Munn, Weber and
Mitchell Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) each had multi-hit days for the Saints. Jose Mercado led the Cougars by going 3-for-4 with a RBI
