Men’s Tennis Gets First Win of the Season

ST. PETER, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2019 season with a 7-2 victory over Saint Mary's University Saturday at the Swanson Tennis Center.
 
Doubles:
CSS earned wins in two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and Rafa Gonzalez (La Libertad, El Salvador/FESA) won 8-5 for their second win of the weekend and the No. 2 team of Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 8-4. The Cardinals (2-2) were able to avoid the sweep, by winning No. 3 doubles in a tiebreak.
 
Singles:
CSS showed its strength at the top of the lineup in singles as Tykhonenko improved to 3-0 this season with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot. Schneider also won for the second straight day with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 2.
 
Gonzalez was finally able to avoid a third-set super-breaker to win at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 6-3. Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) rallied from a set down at the No. 5 spot win 4-6, 6-1, (10-8). Jolowsky gave the Saints their seventh win, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
 
Up Next:
The Saints (1-2) will have their first match in Duluth next Saturday when Macalester College visits the Duluth Indoor Sports Center. Action begins at 4 p.m.
