ADRIAN, Mich. (
csssaints.com) – Senior goaltender
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) made a career-high 50 saves as the St. Scholastica men's hockey team held off No. 6 Adrian College (Mich.) 3-2 Friday night in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action.
How It Happened
The Saints would be out-shot 19-4 in the opening period and allowed the first goal of the game 10 minutes into the contest. CSS was on the penalty-kill for much of the first period with four penalties and were a man-short for the total eight minutes, but did not surrender a power-play goal.
CSS found the equalizer six minutes into the second period as
Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-1.
Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) and
Karl Wright (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (Connecticut Nighthawks-USPHL)) had the assists. Later in the period with both teams skating four, the Saints took the lead as
Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) lit the lamp to make it 2-1.
Isaac Kobienia (Wilmar, Minn./Willmar HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) was credited with the assist. That would be the score after two periods.
St. Scholastica extended its lead to 3-1 with a
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) goal less than six minutes into the period.
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) had the assist. The Bulldogs went on the power-play shortly after the third goal, but only one shot would go on goal.
Adrian pulled the goaltender with a minute remaining and cut the deficit to 3-2 with 51 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs got one more look at a game-tying goal in the final 30 seconds, but was denied by Steeves as the Saints prevailed 2-1.
Goaltending
Steeves' 50 saves are the most by a Saint since Colin Rundell had 50 saves against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in February of 2013. Cameron Gray had 15 saves for Adrian.
