csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team welcomed North Central University (Minn.) to the Reif for a Wednesday night matchup. The Saints opened up their Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule with a strong showing on the offensive end shooting over 50 percent from the field to beat the Rams 87-63.
How It Happened
The Saints would get their scoring started with the first five points from
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS), but would have a small deficit at 6-5. North Central (2-7, 0-1 UMAC) would extend its lead to 9-5 before
Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) would hit a quick three in the corner to bring the Saints deficit to one at 9-8. The Saints would tie up the game at 11-11 before they would go on a 13-4 run in the next four minutes to take a 23-15 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. The biggest lead of the half would come with 6:43 left in the half after an assist from
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) to
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) to bring the Saints lead to 34-19. The remainder of the half would see five Saints scoring and heading into the half with a 43-28 lead. Carlson and
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) each had 10 points in the half.
The Saints would trade buckets with North Central for the majority of the second half with their smallest margin being 11 points. However, following a North Central technical foul, the Saints scored five straight points to lengthen the margin back to 16. Both teams combined for 16 turnovers in the half. The Saints would turn those turnovers into 14 points as North Central would score 20 points off turnovers in the half.
In the CSS held off the Rams for an 87-63 victory.
Top Performers
The Saints would be led by Anderson with 22 points off the bench. Carlson and
Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) added 16 and 15 points respectively for the Saints. Wilken would add a point-rebound double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds on the night. Anderson and Fischer were the top assisters on the night.
