DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's nordic ski team was in action once again at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center on Sunday with members of the team competing in the 1.4m classic sprint races.
Sprint Racing Format
In a sprint event, each athlete starts by trying to qualify by time, racing the sprint course against the clock. The fastest 30 times in the field advance to five quarterfinals in which the first two skiers across the line advance, as well as, the fastest two skiers from the quarterfinals who were not in the top two. The same happens in the semifinals, whittling the field down to six athletes in the finals to determine the winner and rank order. All skiers outside the top 30 end the day in the order they finished the qualifier.
How it Happened
The Saints would sit out 10 skiers in Sunday as the cold weather delayed the start of competition for the day. CSS would still have eight skiers qualify to the quarterfinals with sophomore
Gus Schatzlein (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake HS) leading the team in qualifying, posting the third-fastest time at 3:38.
In the five quarterfinal heats, Schatzlein won his heat and first-year skier
Joe Lynch (St. Anthony Village, Minn./St. Anthony HS) also won his heat to advance to the semifinals. Schatzlein kept it rolling winning the second semifinal heat to advance to the finals. Lynch would fall one second shy of advancing.
Schatzlein would finish third in the finals as Cooper Lennox took the crown after posting the fastest time in every round and qualifying
