ST. PAUL, Minn. (
csssaints.com) -- The University of Northwestern (Minn.) used a 21-0 run to end the first half en route to a 77-54 victory over the St. Scholastica men's basketball team on Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.
How It Happened
The Saints would come out of the tip with four straight points by
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) to gain a quick 4-2 lead over the hosting Eagles (6-5, 3-1 UMAC). Northwestern would then go on a 14-2 run in the next five minutes of the first half to gain a 16-6 lead over the Saints.
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) and
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) would chip in two buckets to trim the deficit to 16-10. Neither team would make a bucket for the next three minutes before a steal and dish by
Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) would lead to a dunk on the other end for
Joe Cvancara (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) to bring the St. Scholastica within four at 16-12.
The Saints would trade buckets with the Eagles before
Craig Burger (Hayward, Wis./Hayward HS) would hit a three to bring the game within one point at 19-18 in favor of Northwestern. Anderson would make a layup to give the Saints a 20-19 lead before Northwestern would call a timeout.
Silgen made two layups to bring the Saints lead up to five with seven minutes left in the first half. However, Northwestern would finish the remaining seven minutes of the half on a 21-0 run with the Saints missing 13 straight shots. The Eagles took a 40-24 into the locker room for halftime.
St. Scholastica would come out of halftime trading buckets with Northwestern for the first six minutes of the second half. The Saints would make a small eight-point run to trim the Eagle lead to 54-38, but Northwestern would call a timeout and the momentum would be back in their favor. The Saints would only muster up 16 points in the remaining 11 minutes of the game and would fall to Northwestern 77-54.
Top Performers
Leading the way for the Saints on offense was Silgen with 15 points off the bench. Cvancara had eight points, while Anderson and Burger added seven points each.
All five Northwestern starters scored in double-figures and Tanner Youngberg had 10 points and 20 rebounds.
