DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – Three freshmen accounted for all four goals as the St. Scholastica men's hockey team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College 4-1 on Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena to wrap up its first half of the season.
How It Happened
After failing to convert on two power-plays earlier in the first period, the Saints were able to get the lone goal of the period as
Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) found
Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) in front of the net and he buried it to make it 1-0.
The Saints added to their lead in a big way with three goals in the second. It started with
Isaac Kobienia (Wilmar, Minn./Willmar HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) intercepting a pass at the blue line and then beating the goaltender top shelf to make it 2-0 almost midway through the period. Two minutes later, CSS added to its lead when
Kyle Star (Langley, British Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) found
Boe Bjorge (Grand Forks, N.D./Grand Forks Central HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) in front for his first collegiate goal.
Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) was also credited with an assist. The final St. Scholastica goal of the period would be once again scored by Bjorge, putting in a loose puck in front, to make it 4-0 after two periods.
Riley Bechard (Sedley, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Woodstock-MJAHL)) and
Nate Drobnick (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Fort Francis-SIJHL)) had the assists.
Gustavus (5-6-0) added a goal in the third period to avoid the shutout and make the final 4-1 Saints.
Goaltending
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) made 24 saves to earn the win, while Filip Grancarov had 25 saves for the Gusties.
