Slow Start Halts Men’s Basketball Win Streak

SUPERIOR, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The University of Wisconsin-Superior went on an 11-0 run early in Wednesday night's Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest and that ultimately proved to be the difference as the St. Scholastica men's basketball team could not find the recipe for a comeback and fell 72-58.
 
How It Happened
A pair of Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) buckets made the scored 4-4 early, but the Yellowjackets (5-4, 3-0 UMAC) then scored the next 11 consecutive points over the next three minutes to up 11. CSS went scoreless for nearly five minutes with turnovers on four straight possessions at one point.
 
CSS continued to struggle on the offensive end with the Yellowjackets leading 21-11 with 11 minutes remaining in the half. UWS built its largest lead of the half at 27-13 with eight and a half minutes left in the first. The Saints would battle back going on a 15-7 run in the next six minutes to bring the Yellowjacket lead down to 34-28. Both teams would battle for the last few minutes of the half with UW-Superior going into the half leading 38-30.
 
The Yellowjackets outscored the Saints 14-7 on points off turnovers in the half. Superior shot 54 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while the Saints shot just 36 percent.
 
St. Scholastica could only muster four points in the first seven minutes of the second half and fell behind by as much as 18 points with nine minutes remaining.
 
The Saints went on a 15-7 run with just under 10 minutes to go in the half to bring the Yellowjacket lead to 65-55 with two minutes left in the game. The Saints would only manage to score three points in the remaining two minutes of the half and fell to UW-Superior 72-58.
 
Top Performers
Wilken led the Saints with 17 points and seven rebounds on the night. Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) chipped in 10 points, while Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) and Chance Larson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS) each added eight points. Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) scored seven points and brought down a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

The Saints (3-6, 2-1 UMAC) will travel to St. Paul for a Saturday afternoon matchup against the University of Northwestern (Minn.). Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
