DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team recorded at least 20 shots on goal in each period Friday night, but fell to Concordia University Wisconsin 4-3 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opener at Mars Lakeview Arena.
How it Happened
The Saints got out in front midway into the opening period as
Isaac Kobienia (Wilmar, Minn./Willmar HS (Minnesota Wilderness-NAHL)) scored his first collegiate goal to make it 1-0.
Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) and
Alec Severson (Roseau, Minn./Roseau HS (Thief River Falls-SIJHL)) had the assists. Concordia would tie it less than two minutes later to make it 1-1. Those would be the only even-strength goals of the contest.
CUW added a short-handed goal with less than two minutes remaining in the period to make it 2-1 Falcons at the first intermission.
Concordia extended its lead with a power-play goal 45 seconds into the second period to make it 3-1. The Saints were once again on the penalty kill four minutes later, but would get a short-handed goal themselves when the Falcons put the puck into their own net to cut the margin to 3-2.
Zack DeBoom (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Granite City-NA3HL)) got credited with the goal, his first as a Saint.
CSS would have two more power-plays in the second period, but came up empty as it trailed 3-2 at the second intermission.
St. Scholastica would have a three-minute power-play off a CUW major penalty, but once again it was the Falcons scoring short-handed to make it 4-2 as the Saints came away with nothing again.
With just over two minutes to play and the CSS net empty,
Tyler Hinterser (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville HS (Brookings-NAHL)) lit the lamp to make it 4-3.
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) and
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) had the assists. The Saints pulled the net again, but could not find the equalizer in a 4-3 loss.
Goaltending
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) finished with 18 saves on the night. Bo Didur had 62 saves for Concordia.
