HANCOCK, Mich. (
csssaints.com) The St. Scholastica men's basketball team overcame a nine-point second half deficit to force overtime and then used a 7-0 run in overtime to defeat Finlandia University (Mich.) 92-85 Tuesday night.
How It Happened
The Saints would come out slow giving up six points right out of the tipoff. They would find their first bucket three minutes in the game by way of a
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) layup. Wilkin would score on the next possession to bring it to 8-4 in favor of Finlandia.
Nick Carlson (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge HS) would hit two three pointers in the next two minutes to tie the game at 11-11. Neither team would be successful on many scoring opportunities until five minutes remaining in the half. The Saints would score 12 points to Finlandia's 17 and would go into the half down 44-36.
The second half would start out as St. Scholastica's, going on a 13-6 run in the first five minutes of the second half bringing the score to 50-49 with Finlandia still leading. The Saints would fall off their great shooting with the Lions gaining a nine-point lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the half at 66-57.
The Saints would begin to trim the lead with two free throws by
Jack Silgen (Crosby, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS (St. Thomas)) to bring their deficit to seven. Carlson would go on a nine-point run himself in the next four minutes to tie the game up with less than four minutes left in the game.
The Saints gained their first lead of the game with 1:28 left in the game by way of a layup by Wilken to go up 76-75.
Cade Goggleye (Nett Lake, Minn./North Woods HS) would get to the free throw line and make one of two free throws to go up 77-75. A last second jumper by Finlandia would go in to tie the game at 77-77. A Finlandia foul would send the Saints to the line, but would miss both to send the game into overtime.
The Saints would come out giving up two free throws out of the gate, but would get a three by Carlson to bring them back up by one. After three straight points from Finlandia to go up 83-80 the Saints would go on 7-0 run to go up 89-83. A layup by Finlandia would bring the lead within four points, but free throws by Goggleye and Wilken would seal the win 92-85.
Top Performers
Carlson led all scorers with a career-high 37 points. Wilken was one rebound shy of a 20-20 game with 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds on the day. Silgen also added a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Goggleye led the Saints with six assists.

The Saints (1-5) will begin their conference schedule when they welcome North Central University (Minn.) next Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Reif Gymnasium.
