Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) scored three of his four goals in the third period as the St. Scholastica men's hockey team rallied to defeat Trine University (Ind.) 5-3 Friday night in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) action.
How it Happened
The Saints scored first when
Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) got the puck past the goal line just before the net was dislodged to make it 1-0 seven minutes in.
Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) and
Nate Drobnick (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS (Fort Francis-SIJHL)) had the assists. Trine evened things up with a goal at 3:25 remaining in the period to make it 1-1 at the first intermission. The Thunder had been outscoring teams 12-2 in the first period this season and outshot the Saints 11-6, but the game was tied after one period.
The Thunder took their first lead of the evening six minutes into the second period. However, CSS would go on the power-play 30 seconds later and Rose tied the contest back up 14 seconds into that power-play. Pionk and
Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) were credited with the assists.
Trine responded on the power-play with 7:40 remaining in the second period to go back up by a 3-2 score and that score stood through the second intermission.
The third period belonged to Saints and Rose as less than 30 seconds into the period Rose found the net once again with Talbot and Pionk on the assists. It stayed tied at 3-3 until the Saints went on the power-play midway through the period as Rose put in a rebound off a
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) shot to make it 4-3 CSS with nine minutes remaining. Fuss also was credited with an assist.
The Thunder pulled their goaltender with 1:40 remaining and the Saints put the game on ice as it was Rose again chasing down the puck and finding that empty net to make the final 5-3.
Goaltending
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) made 23 saves to earn his second consecutive win. Brett Young had 26 saves for the Thunder.
