ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team traveled to St. Bonifacius for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup against Crown College on Wednesday. A strong defensive first half would be followed by a huge four-goal second half for the Saints in the 5-1 win over the Storm.
How it Happened
A very back and forth defensive first half was halted in the 36
th minute when
Alex Dodd (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville HS) found
William Francis (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) for a clean shot to put the Saints up 1-0. St. Scholastica's lead would only hold for a few minutes until the top of the 42
nd minute with a Crown (2-9-2, 0-2-1 UMAC) offensive attack would ensue.
Corey Bulheller (Middleton, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) saved the first shot, but the shot would ricochet back and give a Crown player an easy shot into the net for the goal tying the game 1-1.
The Saints would put the offensive woes to an end early in the second half when, in the 47
th minute,
Armin Bobaric (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) would find Dodd, a quick dribble move would shake a defender and Dodd would once again find Francis for a laser of a shot to get St. Scholastica's lead back up to one at 2-1. The Saints would capitalize on poor transition defense and have a jail break in ahead of them. In the 50
th minute
Craig Chudley (Exeter, England/Exeter College) would break away and find Dodd who would zig zag around defenders before he would kick a perfect ball right out of the reach of the goalkeeper's arms to put the Saints up 3-1 early in the second half.
Each team would keep on the offensive intensity with many shots being put on both goalkeepers. Over 20 minutes would go by before a corner kick by the Saints would lead to a
Ken Pryde (Fareham, England/Barton Peveril College) goal in the 75
th minute to increase the St. Scholastica lead to 4-1. Substitutes would be put in for both teams following the Pryde goal. The last goal of the game was put in with 30 seconds remaining in the game by
Franco Garcia (Minneapolis, Minn./Hiawatha Collegiate HS) bringing the Saints the win in St. Bonifacius by a score of 5-1.
