DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team hosted Bethany Lutheran College for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matchup at Saints Field on Saturday afternoon. Each team had plenty of offensive opportunities, but each team could only muster up two goals each in a 2-2 tie.
How It Happened
Neither St. Scholastica nor Bethany Lutheran (11-5-1, 4-2-1 UMAC) could get a solid hold on one side of the field until the 29
th minute when Bethany Lutheran got a solid offensive chance and capitalized on it to gain a 1-0 lead. The single goal would be the only scoring in the first half for either team. Bethany out-shot the Saints 13-3 in the half.
The second half started out similarly to the first until the 64
th minute when
Armin Bobaric (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) found
Malcolm Lumsden (Kingston, Jamaica/Kingston College (Lake Superior College)) for a quick shot just out of the reach of the goalkeeper to tie up the game at 1-1. A few minutes later Lumsden had a great opportunity at a goal, but just missed hitting the crossbar. Lumsden would continue his offensive mindset once again when
Finigan Huffington (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/John Gray HS) found Lumsden for a 70
th minute goal to give the Saints their first lead at 2-1.
A St. Scholastica foul in the box would give the Vikings a penalty kick that they would take advantage of by getting the game tying goal through the net in the 73
rd minute to bring the score to 2-2. Neither team would be able to get any solid scoring opportunities for the remainder of the half which brought overtime to the fans at Saints Field.
Overtime period number one would result in minimal offensive opportunities and no points being score by either team. Overtime period two was nearly a replica of the first overtime period, once again resulting in no goals and a tie for the Saints and the Vikings.
Top Performers
The Saints were led by Lumsden with his two goals on the day coming by way of assists from Huffington and Bobaric.
Corey Bulheller (Middleton, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) manned the net for the Saints making five saves.
