HANCOCK, Mich. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent Finlandia University (Mich.) by a score of 89-66 on Wednesday evening.
How it Happened
The teams traded baskets early in the half, with the lead changing seven times in the first seven minutes. But with 13:24 to go in the half, CSS went on a 17-3 run to earn a 12-point lead. The margin got as high as 13 before the teams went into halftime with the score at 36-26.
CSS started the second half where it had left off in the first, going on a 12-0 run just three minutes in to increase its lead to 22 points. The Lions worked hard to try and cut into CSS' lead, and with 10:45 left in the game had managed to make it a 14-point game.
However, CSS responded in the next seven minutes by outscoring Finlandia 31-16, and increasing its lead to 29 points, its highest advantage of the game, with 2:25 left on the clock.
Finlandia (0-12) went on a 7-1 run in the final minutes to reduce the Saints' lead to 23 points and the game finished 89-66 in favor of CSS.
Top Performers for CSS
Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) led the Saints in scoring with 17 points. He also led in assists with seven.
Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) and
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) were the other Saints to reach double figures, with Weets putting up 13 and Fischer putting up 10.
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS) led CSS in rebounds with nine.
Top Performers for the Opponent
Three Lions reached double figures, Dylan Underwood led with 17 points, Tyler Browner had 14, and Jamar DeShields-Beard put up 10.
