ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team led by 15 at halftime, but would be out-scored 50-29 in the second half to lose to the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 81-75 on Saturday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.

How it Happened
The Saints took their first lead of the game on a Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) 3-pointer four minutes into the game, which made it 9-8. Thompson would make a couple more 3-pointers moments later to extend the lead to seven with 11 minutes left in the first half.

The good shooting for CSS continued in the half as it went on a 17-3 run over five minutes to extend the lead to 41-26 with three minutes before halftime. Brandon Newman (Barnum, Minn./Barnum HS) made a pair of free throws in the final second of the first half as the Saints went into the locker room with a 46-31 advantage.

St. Scholastica shot 51 percent from the floor and made eight 3-pointers in the first half. However, the second half would be another story.

The Saints missed their first six shots of the second half, but still led by nine, three minutes into half. The Eagles (8-6, 4-1 UMAC) got the margin down to four with less than 12 minutes left, but a Nate Weets (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) 3-pointer gave the Saints a 65-55 lead with 8:27 remaining.

Unfortunately, after the Weets field goal, the Saints missed seven straight shots over the next six minutes and Northwestern would make four 3-pointers during that span as part of a 19-2 run and just like that the Eagles led 74-67 with less than three minutes remaining.

The Eagles made enough free throws in the final minutes to seal the game by a final of 81-75. The Saints shot only 27 percent in the second half to finish at 40 percent for the game. The Saints committed seven turnovers in the second half, after committing just two in the first half.
