DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – Despite having 35 more attempts on target, the No. 10 St. Scholastica men's hockey team was once again defeated by Northland College 4-2 at Mars Lakeview Arena on Saturday.
The Scoring
Northland (6-6-2, 4-2-2 NCHA) struck first on its first shot attempt of the game with 15:01 to go in the period. A minute later, the Saints had the opportunity to tie the game after they were awarded a penalty shot for a tripping call on Northland. But CSS was unable to convert the penalty and the period finished 1-0 in favor of Northland, despite the Saints having 17 more attempts on target than the 'Jacks.
Six minutes into the second period the Saints went on the power play, but the Jacks didn't allow them a single shot. But with 4:52 left in the period,
Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) and
Parker Weekes (Ketchum, Idaho/Holderness School (Boston Jr. Rangers-EHL)) set up
Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) to tie the game at 1-1. A littler later with 3:01 left in the period, Cordeiro was able to force a turnover by Northland right in front of their net to set up an easy finish and give the Saints a 2-1 lead. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 15-4 in favor of CSS.
The Jacks were able to find an equalizer early in the third period, just under three minutes into the period to make it 2-2. And one minute and 31 seconds later Northland scored again to retake the lead and make it 3-2.
With 6:37 to go in the period, CSS had another power play opportunity, but were not able to complete it, as the Saints were called for hooking 43 seconds into the power play. Searching for an equalizer, CSS pulled its goalie with 1:25 left in the game, but were unable to find one. And with seven seconds remaining, Northland scored an empty-netter to finish the game at 4-2.
