ASHLAND, Wis. (
csssaints.com) -- The 10
th-ranked College of St. Scholastica men's hockey team erased a three-goal deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in the third, but would then commit four penalties in the final nine minutes of regulation and in overtime with the last ultimately giving Northland College a 4-3 overtime victory Friday night at the Bay Area Civic Center.
How it Happened
The LumberJacks (5-6-2, 3-2-2 NCHA) took a two-goal lead into the first intermission with goals coming one minute and seven seconds apart in the final five minutes of the period. Northland out-shot the Saints 16-9 in the opening period.
The LumberJacks then made it 3-0 with less than three minutes remaining in the second period. The Saints (9-4-1, 4-2-1 NCHA) finally got on the board with 30 seconds left in the period when
Seth Chumley (Cambridge, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minnesota Iron Rangers-SIJHL)) scored on the power-play.
Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) and
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) had the assists.
Then 18 seconds into the third period,
Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) found the net to cut the margin to 3-2.
Jon Hansen (Twig, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) and
Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) were credited with the assists. Later in the period with 9:15 remaining,
Davis Ross (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances HS (Fort Frances-SIJHL)) scored the equalizer to tie the game at 3-3. Hansen had his second assist of the night.
However, 12 seconds after the tying goal was scored the Saints would commit a penalty. They would then commit two more penalties in the third period, as the Saints killed off six penalty minutes after tying the game with 9:15 remaining. After 60 minutes, the game remained tied at 3-3.
In overtime, the Saints would be called for another penalty for too many skaters. The LumberJacks took advantage this time, scoring the game-winner 10 seconds into the power-play and with three minutes remaining to give Northland the 4-3 victory.
