Freshmen Lead Men’s Skiers on Saturday in Rhinelander

RHINELANDER, Wis. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's ski team competed in the 15km Classic race on Saturday in frigid conditions at the CAVOC Trails and for the first time with the entire Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) contingent.
 
Top Performers
Freshman Nick Matelich (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS (Montana State)) would lead the Saints with a fifth-place finish, posting a time of 41:09. He was five five-tenths of a second off fourth place and seven seconds off the race winner. Fellow freshman Emil Book Bratbak (Lillehammer, Norway/Lillehammer) was right behind Matelich in sixth place with a time of 41:14.
 
The final Saint to score was junior Jack Christianson (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS) with a time of 43:08. Freshman Hannes Stenstrom (Are, Sweden/Are Skidgymnasium) was the only other Saint to finish in the top-20 in 17th place.
 
Team Finishes
Northern Michigan University captured the team crown for the day with three of the top four finishers. Zak Ketterson was the individual race winner with a time of 41:02.
 
Michigan Tech University was able to edge the Saints for second place by four points.

Action continues on Sunday with the 10km freestyle at 1:30 p.m.
