DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team gave up a late goal in the third period to fall 2-1 to Marian University (Wis.) at Mars Lakeview Arena on Saturday evening.
The Scoring
After a scoreless first period in which CSS only managed four attempts on target to Marian's 11, the second period only produced one goal. After starting goaltender
Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) left the game due to injury, Marian (10-8-3, 8-5-1 NCHA) opened the scoring with 7:19 to go in the period. CSS then went on the power play with 5:12 to go, but were not able to find the back of the net. Despite trailing at the second intermission, the Saints controlled the second period and had a shot advantage of 20-11.
A little over five minutes into the third period, an apparent
Michael Talbot (Anoka, Minn./Anoka HS (Minot-NAHL)) tying goal off a rebound would be waved off. However, the Saints kept pushing for an equalizer and were finally rewarded with 5:40 left in the game when
Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) found the back of the net during the Saints' second power play opportunity of the game.
CSS then gave up a late power play opportunity, but were able to limit Marian to just three shots on net. But 40 seconds later, with overtime looming, Marian took the lead once again with 2:19 left to make it 2-1.
The Saints then pulled their goalie in search of another equalizer, but were only able to force one save out of Marian's goalie and fell by a 2-1 score.
