No. 5 St. Norbert Outlasts Men’s Hockey

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – After tying the game at 3-3 just 18 seconds into the third period, the St. Scholastica men's hockey was unable to find another equalizer in a 6-5 loss to No. 5 St. Norbert College (Wis.) at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday evening.   
 
First Period
The Saints got an early power play opportunity 29 seconds into the game, but weren't able to record a shot on goal. Six minutes later, the Saints gave up a penalty of their own, but they were able to limit the Green Knights (15-4-3, 11-3-1 NCHA) to two shots on goal. With 8:53 left in the period, St. Norbert got their first of the night to make it 1-0. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 15-4 in favor of SNC.
 
Second Period
The Saints were able to find the net one minute and 12 seconds into the period, Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) set up Carson Rose (Surrey, British Columbia/Elgin Park Secondary (Weyburn-SJHL)) to tie the game at 1-1. But with 7:49 to go, SNC scored again to take back the lead. They added another just over a minute later to increase their lead to 3-1.
 
The Saints were able to make it a one-goal game with 5:04 left in the period when Rose got his second of the period. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 16-12 to SNC.
 
Third Period
It took CSS just 18 seconds to get on the board in the third period. Brett Radford (Campbell River, British Columbia/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Canmore-AJHL)) scored his first goal of the season off a Kyle Star (Langley, British Columbia/Brookswood (Trail Smoke-BCHL)) rebound to tie the game at 3-3. But four minutes later, St. Norbert took the lead once again. They added another two minutes later to increase their lead to 5-3.
 
The Saints went on the power play with 13:04 left in the game and were able to get a goal back 50 seconds into the man-advantage thanks to Star. But three minutes later, the Knights restored their two-goal advantage to make it 6-4. Jon Hansen (Twig, Minn./Duluth Marshall (Minnesota Mullets-USPHL)) scored for the Saints with 6:18 left in the game. The Saints pulled their goalie with 1:10 to go and had chances late, but fell by a 6-5 score. Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 13-10 in favor of CSS.
 
Top Performers for the Saints
In his first game back since January 12, Rose led CSS in goals with two. Golka led in assists with three. Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) saved 35 of the 41 shots he faced in net for the Saints.
 
Top Performers for the Green Knights
Brad Pung led SNC in scoring with two goals. Roman Uchyn and Riley Christensen each had two assists. T.J. Black stopped 24 of the 29 shots he faced to earn the win in net for St. Norbert.
