DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team defeated Martin Luther College by a score of 64-55 at Reif Gymnasium Wednesday evening.
The Scoring
The teams traded baskets for the start of the half, but eight minutes into the half, CSS went on a 7-0 run to gain a 20-14 lead. The Knights (5-7, 2-3 UMAC) then went on a five-point run of their own to make it 20-19.
With 1:30 left in the half, MLC had taken the lead, making it 25-24. But a jumper by
Collin Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) with 40 seconds left ensured the Saints would go into halftime with the lead.
CSS opened the second half with a jumper to increase their lead to 28-25. But MLC responded with a 3-pointer to tie the game. The Knights were then able to take their first and only lead of the half to make it 34-33. CSS was able to respond with an 8-0 run to make it 41-34 Saints.
The Knights would be to cut the margin down to one with less than seven minutes remaining, but
Sam Thompson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and
Quinn Fischer (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) each added back-to-back 3-pointers to increase CSS lead back to seven with 4:42 to go.
However, MLC had cut the Saints' lead to three points with just 2:53 left on the clock, but a big bucket by
Jarod Wilken (Annandale, Minn./Annandale HS), followed by another 3-pointer by Thompson spurred another 8-0 run to put the game away.
The game finished 64-55 in favor of CSS.
