Finlandia Scores Four in the Third to Skate Past Saints

HANCOCK, Mich. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's hockey team gave up four unanswered goals in the third period in a 7-4 loss to Finlandia University (Mich.) on Friday evening.
 
How it Happened
CSS took an early lead by scoring twice midway through the period. Dustin Cordeiro (Kitchener, Ontario/Elliot Lake Secondary School (Cochrane-NOJHL)) scored first for the Saints with a Sam Fuss (Edina, Minn./Edina HS (Minot-NAHL)) assist. Then a minute and seven seconds later, Cole Golka (Ardrossan, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Dryden Ice Dogs-SIJHL)) scored on the power-play with Nate Pionk (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS (Minot-NAHL)) and Fuss assisting. Finlandia was able to get one back towards the end of the period to make it 2-1 at the first intermission.
 
The Lions (6-10-2, 4-5-2 NCHA) then started the second period by scoring in the opening 30 seconds to tie the game at 2-2. Finlandia took its first lead with five minutes remaining, but the Saints responded moments later with a Pionk goal to make it 3-3 at the second intermission. Jordan Fralich (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School (Bismarck-NAHL)) recorded his NCHA-leading 16th assist.
 
In the third period, CSS would give up four unanswered goals as the Lions earned a 7-3 lead. With less than two minutes left, the Saints were able to pull a goal back on the power play, but the game would end 7-4 in favor of Finlandia.
 
Top Performers for CSS
Golka led the Saints in scoring with two goals. Pionk and Cordeiro each contributed a goal for CSS. Pionk also had two assists. Fuss led in assists with three.
 
Nick Trenciansky (Vancouver, British Columbia/Holy Cross Regional HS (Kindersley-SJHL)) stopped 21 of the 26 shots he faced for the Saints, spending the first 44 minutes of the game in goal. Zane Steeves (Red Deer, Alberta/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (100 Mile Wranglers-KIJHL)) replaced Trenciansky and saved four of the five shots he faced.
 
Top Performers for the Opponent
Cale Markham led the Lions in scoring with a hat trick. Blake Peavey, Alex Rezansoff, Teddy Randell, and Connor Hannon had the other four goals.
 
Marcus Gloss saved 27 of the 31 shots he faced in net for Finlandia.
