DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's soccer team tied University of Wisconsin-Superior 1-1 Saturday afternoon after the Saints came back and scored a late goal in the 79th minute of the game with the Yellowjackets playing a man-down.
How it Happened
In the first half, the Saints and Yellowjackets were evenly matched. Superior out-shot St. Scholastica 5-3, but the score was 0-0 going into the second half.
Six minutes into the second half, Superior scored after James Bruce was able to finish off from a redirect. With the Yellowjackets up 1-0, St. Scholastica fought hard to tie up the game. In the 69
th minute a skirmish ensued and a red card was given to a UWS player. The Yellowjackets then had to finish the game one player short.
CSS finally had a breakthrough 10 minutes after the red card as
Juan Ochoa (Chihuahua, Mexico/Prepa Tec) found
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) at the top of the box and Buckton snuck the ball inside the left post to tie it at 1-1. The game would remain 1-1 once the second half ended, sending the game into overtime.
During the overtime sessions, both teams put shots on goal in the first 10 minutes with a header by
Nolan Friday (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) being the best chance by either team. In the end both teams were unable to score, and the final tally was 1-1.
Goalkeeping
CSS goalkeeper
Corey Bulheller (Middleton, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) was in for the first 69 minutes and made four out of five saves.
Udeme Effiom (Uyo, Nigeria/Secondary Commercial School (Lake Superior College)) came in relief and finished the game. He saved one shot during the first overtime to earn the tie.
