DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team led for 72 minutes in Friday's season opener at Saints Field, but Luther College (Iowa) netted two goals in the final four minutes, including a penalty-kick goal for the game winner with less than two minutes remaining to defeat the Saints 2-1.
Saints Score Early
The Saints were able to breakout in the 15
th minute when
Alex Dodd (Lakeville, Minn./Burnsville HS) slid the ball to middle to
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) who delivered a perfect ball to
Malcolm Lumsden (Kingston, Jamaica/Kingston College (Lake Superior College)) sprinting down the left side. Lumsden then beat the goalkeeper far post to make it 1-0
Buckton would get behind the defense again in the 24
th minute and was one-on-one with the keeper, but was denied. Unfortunately for the Saints, that would their final shot attempt of the game.
CSS led 1-0 at the half with the Norse outshooting the Saints 9-3, but shots on goal were 3-3.
All Luther in the Second Half
Luther put the pressure on the Saints for most of the second half as it attempted seven shots in the first five minutes, including one that hit the post. CSS goalkeeper
Corey Bulheller (Middleton, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) made nine saves until Ben Keller headed in a corner kick in the 87
th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
The Norse continued the pressure and were able to draw a foul in the box, which resulted in a penalty kick with 1:42 remaining. Brunno Colon would bury the attempt to give the Norse the 2-1 lead and eventual victory.
Notable Performances
Bulheller made 12 saves in his first St. Scholastica start. Buckton had two of the St. Scholastica's three shots.
Colon had seven shots on goal for Luther and added a goal and assist.
