DE PERE, Wis. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Lawrence University (Wis.) 4-3 Friday night in the St. Norbert College Tournament.
Nichols Leads Lawrence Early
The Vikings (0-4) didn't take long to get on the board as Will Nichols scored the first of his three goals 50 seconds into the contest to make it 1-0. It was Nichols again a minute and half later to extend the Lawrence lead to 2-0.
The Saints cut the lead in half in the 21
st minute with
Luke Buckton (Bath, England/Writhlington School) finishing a cross from
Jordan Finneran (Newmarket, England/Cambridge Regional College). However, it was Nichols recording his third goal less than two minutes later to make it 3-1 Vikings.
Saints Comeback
In the final four minutes of the first half, CSS got an important goal from
Juan Ochoa (Chihuahua, Mexico/Prepa Tec) to make the halftime score 3-2.
Alex Dodd (Lakeville, Minn./Burnsville HS) was credited with the assist. Lawrence held a 9-8 lead in shots in the first half.
St. Scholastica would be awarded a penalty kick two minutes into the second half and Buckton converted the PK to tie the game at 3-3.
Moving to the 59
th minute, the Saints took their first lead of the night with the second connection of contest between Finneran and Buckton making it 4-3. That third goal by Buckton matched a career high.
The wide-open play continued with both teams having scoring chances, but the Saints would outlast the Vikings 4-3. CSS outshot the Lawrence 9-4 in the second half and 17-13 for the game.
Goalkeeping
Corey Bulheller (Middleton, England/Highfields Secondary School (Bacone)) made four saves to earn his first win as a Saint. Cole Kelez had four saves in the loss for the Vikings.
