Hovland Places 19th in Sweltering Heat at NCAA Championships

LA CROSSE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – With the temperature reaching 90 degrees at race time, St. Scholastica senior Casey Hovland (North Branch, Minn./North Branch HS) finished 19th in the 5000m run with a time of 18:36.15 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
 
The Race
It was a six-person breakaway early in the race with Hovland sitting around 10th for the first portion of the event. The race then became a three-person breakaway in the second half and Hovland faded back in the field and would finish 19th of the 22 runners with a time of 18:36.15.
 
Bryn McKillop of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps pulled away in the final lap to capture the 5k national title with a time of 16:36.17.
 
End of Year
Hovland potentially wraps up her running career for the Saints. The list of accomplishments include nine All-Region performances between cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field; five NCAA Championship appearances between the three sports and an All-America performance at the 2016 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
 
Hovland still has a year of outdoor track & field eligibility remaining after not competing during the 2017 outdoor season if she chooses to use it.
