NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- First year stand out Allison Fink had to sweat it out after her preliminary round in the long jump. After nearing her season's best mark of 5.28m in her final jump of the first series, Fink had to wait for the second flight to see if she would secure a place in the final. With nine athletes moving into the final, Fink sat in ninth place with a half dozen jumpers striking at a chance to bump her out. One by one they missed her mark, as Fink hung on to her qualifying position by a thread. In the final, Fink found her groove with the two farthest marks of her career. On Fink's penultimate attempt, she exploded off of the board to a distance of 5.42m to set a new St. Scholastica school record. This result also moved Fink up into eighth place to secure a point for the team.
Fink returns to anchor the 4x100m relay, and compete in the triple jump on Thursday.
In the discus, the Saints saw another incredible performance by a rookie. Ava Halverson qualified for her first MIAC final with a personal best toss of 38.55m. This mark improves on Halverson's mark as the sixth farthest discus thrower in school history.Â
To cap off the night, Abby Wood hung tough in the 10,000m run. In the 25-lap event, Wood gritted to the finish line in a time of 39:58.56 to place eight overall and put another point on the board for the Saints. This mark puts Wood at number seven on the all-time Saints performance list.Â
Regan Niemi (Bemidji, MN/Bemidji HS) ran a strong race in the 1500m run to place 11th overall. She finished in a time of 4:54.87. Grace McCormick (Duluth, MN/Denfeld HS) stormed in behind Niemi with a time of 5:02.03 to place 14th in the MIAC.
Kayla Nelson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) placed 14th in the 400m with a finishing time of 1:00.03.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday to wrap up the MIAC Championship event at St. Olaf College.
