Another Year, Another UMAC Title for Men’s Tennis

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team cruised over bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior on Sunday 9-0 to capture its 22nd consecutive Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Regular Season championship.
 
Doubles
The No. 1 team of Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) shut out their opponents 8-0. The No. 2 tandem of Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 8-3. The No. 3 pair of Connor Croft (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) won 8-1. Croft and Jolowsky have won a team-high seven doubles matches this season.
 
Singles
Moving to singles, Tykhonenko won 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 1 spot. Schneider also rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position. Schneider leads the team with 12 singles wins this spring.
 
Gadke won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won his sixth straight singles match at No. 4 by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Kearney won his fourth straight singles match by scores of 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. The final winner on the day was Jolowsky at No. 6, rallying from a set down to win 3-6, 6-4, (10-7) for his first collegiate singles win.
 
Up Next
The Saints (8-9, 7-0 UMAC) move on to the UMAC Tournament, which for the first time will be for an automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Tournament. With that said, the higher-seeded team hosts each round of the tournament. So, St. Scholastica will host the No. 4 seed Bethany Lutheran College in the UMAC Semifinals Wednesday at 5 p.m. over at the MacArthur School Tennis Courts.
