Men’s Tennis Sweeps; Heads to UMAC Championship

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's tennis team swept Bethany Lutheran College 9-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinals Wednesday night at the MacArthur Tennis Courts.

Doubles
The Saints won all three double matches by huge margins. The No. 1 team, Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and and Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) defeated their Viking opponents 8-2. Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) and Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS), in the No. 2 spot, were victorious with a final score 8-1.

And the No. 3 team, Connor Croft (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS), swept, winning 8-0.

Singles
The Saints won all six singles matches in straight sets. No. 1 Tykhonenko almost swept both sets, succeeding 6-0, 6-1. Schneider, in the No. 2 spot, also triumphed with a final score of 6-3, 6-1. Gadke (No. 3) beat out his opponent after winning his first set 6-1, and then pulled ahead to win in the second set 7-5.

Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), in the No. 4 spot, succeed in both sets by scores of 6-4. 6-4. Kearney (No. 5), swept his first set 6-0 and won his second set 6-4. And to round out the Saints, No. 6 Jolowsky swept both his sets, winning 6-0, 6-0.

Up Next
The Saints (9-9) will face the University of Northwestern (Minn.) in the UMAC Tournament Championship on Saturday at Longview Tennis Club in Duluth for a spot into the NCAA Division III Tournament on the line. Northwestern defeated the University of Wisconsin-Superior 8-1 in the other semifinal this evening. Saturday's match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
