Men's Tennis Prevails at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica men's tennis team beat the University of Northwestern (Minn.) 6-3 Friday night at Johnson Courts. CSS is now the lone unbeaten team in the conference, with one more regular season match remaining.

Doubles
The Saints won two out of three doubles matches. The No. 1 team, Serhii Tykhonenko (Kiev, Ukraine/Lyceum #100 "Podil") and Elliot Schneider (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), and the No. 3 team, Connor Croft (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) and Jake Jolowsky (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) both won with scores of 8-6.

Singles
The Saints also won four out of six singles matches. No. 1 Tykhonenko defeated his Eagle opponent 6-3, 6-4. Schneider, the No. 2 seed, edged out his opponent. Schneider won his first set 6-2, lost his second set 6-4, and won the third set super-breaker 10-2.

No. 4 Trace Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) also narrowly overcame his opponent. Combs lost the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-3, and triumphed in the third (10-6). Jack Kearney (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS), the No. 5 seed, was also victorious, winning 6-4, 6-0 and his victory clinched the dual for St. Scholastica.

At No. 3, Bryce Gadke (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield HS) almost won his match, winning the first set 6-2, losing the second set 6-0, and then losing the last set (11-9).

Up Next
The Saints (7-9, 6-0 UMAC) have their last regular season match on Sunday against bridge rival University of Wisconsin-Superior. Match time is scheduled for noon at the MacArthur School Tennis Courts in Duluth.
