csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team needed just one doubles win and got it to defeat Springfield College (Mass.) 5-4 on Tuesday to complete its spring trip.
Singles
The singles matches took place before the doubles matches on Tuesday. The depth of CSS proved to be the difference in singles play as the Saints won the bottom four flights with some close calls.
Katelyn Rice (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) won at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-3.
Sarah Coryell (Golden Valley, Minn./Armstrong HS) also won in straight sets at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 6-0.
Elizabeth Fink (Rochester, Minn./Rochester Century HS) would have to rally from a set down to win at the No. 4 spot 3-6, 6-0, (10-5). The same was said for
Alexia Brascugli (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) who forced a third set super-breaker to narrowly win 2-6, 6-3 (10-8) at the No. 6 spot.
Doubles
Leading 4-2 heading into doubles play, the Saints needed to win just one of the three doubles matches. Springfield (2-2) took the first two matches to finish by close 8-6 margins to tie the dual at 4-4. It was up to the No. 1 doubles match to decide the dual. The team of Rice and Fink led 7-6 and were able to capture match point in a deuce game to win 8-6 and earn the Saints the 5-4 dual match victory.
